The plant-soil subsystem is one of the most important terrestrial ecosystems relating to the human health. The movement of organic pollutants in this subsystem is dominated by various micro-ecological processes on root-soil interface. These micro-ecological processes are mostly driven by physio-chemical and biological changes induced by root-soil interactions, such as root exudation of organic anions and protons. In order to safeguard the sustainable production of safety food and to maintain the environmental quality, it is essential to understand the mechanisms of these micro-ecological processes. This paper presents a personal overview on the recent achievements in this research field with the aim of provoking further in depth research in the near future.
