The effect of chemical cross-linking and heat-treatment on structure and performance of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) membranes by the method of phase-inversion was studied. According to IR spectra of PVA membranes, their cross-linking density and crystallization were calculated. The result shows that with the increasing of time, the cross-linking density and crystallization improve, but the former is not distinct. Swelling experimental result shows that porosity of heat-treated membranes decrease but porosity of cross-linking has no changes. SEM photographs also verified it. Mechanical property testing indicates that the mechanical properties are very different from each other when membranes are at dry state and wet state. Cross-linked membranes have better mechanical property at dry state but it becomes fragile at wet state. The mechanical property of heat-treated membranes is very different from that of cross-linked membranes. The mechanical property of membranes at wet state is better than that at dry state. The reason may result from the rearrangement of polymer chains induced from heat-treatment and the rearrangement makes the structure and property of membrane changed. Although chemical cross-linking can't change the aggregation structure of PVA polymer, the inner stress induced from cross linking structure makes the property of membrane changed during the swelling process.
