Objective We carried out determination in the serum of the haptoglobin(HPT) and transferrin(TRF) of healthy people at Beijing (50m), Xining(2260m) and Yanshiping(4750m) in order to study the change of the HPT and TRF. Methods Serum concentrations of HPT and TRF were measured by dispersiou-nephelometer assay. Results HPT was decreasing with altitude. They were 0.81 ±0.41. 0.76±0.36 and 0.73 ± 0.32 respectively(P〉0.05). TRF was enhanced with increasing of the altitude. They were 2.50±0.29, 2.66±0.29 and 3.15±0.40, respectively(P〈0.01and P〈0.001). We also compared with HPT and TRF between high hemoglobin and normal hemoglobin in 160 to 179g/L groups at 4750m. HPT was 0.58 ±0.35 and 0.75 ±0.42, respectively. It was dropped by increasing of the hemoglobin (P〈0.05).There was no difference on TRF between high hemoglobin and normal hemoglobin in the two groups. Conclusion Hypoxia and low air pressure at high altitude areas result in increasing of erythrocyfe compensation and metabolism disorders of the body. Therefore it is neccessary to determinate the serum concentrations of the HPT and TRF in order to study their influence on people at high altitude areas.
