Housing in the Netherlands is commonly associated with urban sprawl in the form of endless rows of industrially produced terraced dwellings that encroach further and further on the landscape. Alternatively, in harbour cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam, scope for urban expansion may be found on former dockland sites where large-scale, spectacular, multi-storey housing blocks are built in a form that often bears no direct relationship to the inner city. In contrast to this, the Frisian city of Groningen in the north of the country is pursuing a policy of contextual extension within the existing built fabric. Here, the sites are situated between the historical centre and the developments created in recent decades.
