Shipbuilding Workshop in Qin Dynasty and Ancient Maritime Transportation of Guangzhou

摘  要:Qin and Han Dynasties were important periods for the development of maritime trade and ocean navigation. In 1975, during the excavation of the site of shipbuilding workshop in Qin Dynasty, three juxtaposed shipways and one wood processing workshop were found. Of the shipway, the slides way were made up of parallel slides, with a width of 1.8 to 2.8 meters, a length of over 100 meters. Some crossties were put under the shipway while some wood frusta above. Some other relics were also unearthed, such as some iron tools (chisel), Han Ban Liang coins, bronze arrowhead, etc.. According to recordation, during the pacification of Ling-nan area by Emperor Qin, a lot of ships were built up by Qin army in Panyu (Guangzhou) to fight against Ou Yue. From the site of the workshop, it can be judged that its scale was quite big and it could produce wood ships with a width of 8 meters, a length of 30 meters, and a carrying capacity of 50 to 60 tons. From tombs of East Han, some ship moulds of cargo boat, ferry and regular boat were also unearthed.
