A submerged-flat membrane bioreactor and a conventional activated sludge process were used for municipal wastewater treatment, and the characteristics of sludge liquor were investigated. It was found that satisfactory chemical oxygen demand(COD), biological oxygen demand(BOD) and ammonia nitrogen (NH^-N) removal efficiencies were achieved in MBR, demonstrating a more stable and excellent effluent quality than CAS. Sludge concentration, sludge production and sedimentation in MBR were more different than those in CAS, meanwhile, the relations between sludge viscosity and sludge concentration in two processes can be expressed by different equation. The accumulation of soluble microbial products(SMP) had not been observed in supernatant of MBR during 50~ 161 d experimental period, and SMP with a molecular weight(MW)〉 140 000 in supernatant accounted for 49.6% as contrasted to 22.5% in CAS. Experiments showed that oxygen uptake rate(OUR) of two systems decreased with an increases of the operation time, and OUR of MBR was higher than that of CAS. The microfauna in two systems were different from each other in their species and population.
