摘　　要：世俗化的新教满足了美国人对物质追求的需要,却无法解决道德伦理日趋沦丧的问题,人的心灵变得日益空虚,孤独。作为世俗化发展的结果,新兴宗教虽能迎合人寻找宗教补偿物的需要,但由于其教义极端化,非但不能给人带来内心的平静和真正的自我价值的实现,而且还可能对人类文明构成新的威胁。《圣洁百合》就印证了厄普代克这一观点。Secularized Protestantism may have catered for Americans＇ materialistic pursuit, but it is of no use in the prevention of moral and ethical degradation, which has resulted in spiritual emptiness and loneliness among them. New rehgions, as the result of secularization, may satisfy people＇s needs for the compensation of faith. However, they cannot bring about the peace of mind and self-actualization. Furthermore, new religions with extreme fundamentalist doctrines may impose a new threat upon human civilization. The paper is to reveal this opinion of Updike＇ s with reference to his novel In the Beauty of the Lilies.
