The main aspects of this doubleness are highlighted; the interior comes to mean both a particular sort of space as well as a representation of a space, it is the site of both material and immaterial experiences, and it is used to articulate the workings of the mind. These aspects of doubleness are used to critique conventional ways of writing the history of the interior. These ways assume the interior as a timeless space that we all recognise. instead, the article proposes a project which looks at the historical formation of the interior as a complex concept, and the complex negotiations that occur between subjects and interiors in acts of inhabitation.
