摘 要:It is generally assumed in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) that each of the contextual parameters (field, tenor, and mode) primarily determines choices in each of the three metafunctions (ideational, interpersonal and textual). This paper attempts to look at the modal choices in book reviews as a genre by reference to the three contextual parameters. The analysis shows that in the data, the modal choices as the Interpersonal realizations are closely associated with all the three contextual parameters rather than simply with tenor. It is then argued that in specific given genres, relations between the contextual parameters and the metafunctional choices can be more complex than the above assumption suggests.
