摘 要:Richard Jefferies' The Acorn-Gatherer depicts the miserable life of an illegitimate child in a backward village, arousing deep sympathy and evoking a strong echo in readers' heart through the author's vivid description and witty writing skills. This paper intends to explore the infectious effect from the narrative point of view. Based on the third-person omniscient point of view, Richard Jeffcries adopted the neutral point of view in his narration of the short story. His non-interference leaves more space and freedom to the readers. Moreover, his skillful arrangement of the protagonist's silence all through the story resonates more powerfully with the readers towards the wretched child. Through the above analysis, this paper maintains that the intentional objectivity and silence adds more credibility to the story and strikes deeper the readers' sympathetic chord.
