摘 要:The English majors in the university in China often reach a plateau after receiving certain amount of training and input of English language especially when they become sophomores. This kind of phenomenon is so common that the English teachers must find some methods to cope with it. Plateau phase here means the period in which students have already reached a fairly high level in English language studying but comes to a standstill or even retrogression (陈亚平, 1997). Writing course, because of its unique features and the characteristics of the limited language environment for English learning in China, becomes a good subject to shorten the plateau phase. This paper believes that the plateau phase can be shortened by laying particular emphasis on teaching of writing course in the second year of university. But in order to be effective in solving the problem of plateau phase, the writing course should take the process-focused approach instead of the traditional product-focused approach. The paper made a teaching experiment to prove that the writing course is helpful to the students in plateau phase.
