摘　　要：This paper discusses the skillful employment of ironic art by Hardy in his great work Jude the Obscure. Since art mirrors life, Hardy reflects the conflicts of his time in the novel. Hardy is widely known as an author of tragedy. However, his masterly use of irony in this novel gained him the other world recognition---a great critical and ironic author. Through irony, Hardy expresses his wise paradoxical attitudes towards life. The paper is also aiming at making an exploration of the ambiguity of life reflected in Jude. Through the research on the ironic art in Jude, a conclusion is drawn that life described in the great novel is both typical of his time and of any human development phase. The irony in the fate of the three main characters is focused on in this paper.
