摘 要:This paper attempts to employ relevance theory to analyze the cognition of humor, in the hope that a solution may be found for the humor breakdown arising in cross-cultural communication. The paper is based on the belief that incongruity is at the core of humor, which decides on the fact that the hearer generally has to exert larger processing effort and get greater cognitive effects to find out the optimal relevance in the humor text. Also, ostensive utterances are essential to the appreciation of humor. Finally, ostensive-inferential communication model is introduced to solve humor breakdown in cross-cultural communication.
