摘 要:Mary Barton or A Tale of Manchester Life is the first novel of Mrs. Gaskell, one of the most distinguished British women novelists in the nineteenth century, and the novel, from its birth, has been arousing various disputes between either the professional critics or the general readers. This paper, by employing the theory of feminism and making a coherent and systematic analysis of this historic work, centralizes on the analysis of the utterances and performances of the heroines, like Mary and Margaret. From this it is inferred that the motif suggested in Mary Barton is women's independence in both economy and ideology.
