摘　　要：The Pragmatic Distance Hypothesis by Jianhua Wang, as a redress endeavor, has some new and insightful ideas such as initial pragmatic distance, ongoing pragmatic distance and negotiation about this distance. But his criticism, on which he builds up his theory, is too negative while he claims his own theory universally applicable for most politeness issues. This paper of ours maintains that the biggest weakness of his theory lies with his unclear differentiation of language politeness and utterance politeness on the one hand and of politeness and appropriateness on the other. Hence our remedy, the dynamic-appropriateness interaction.
