Objective To observe the effect of Liuwei Dihuang decoction (LW) (used for "nourishing Yin" in traditional Chinese Medicine) on exercise - induced fatigue in rats. Methods Forty eight SD rats were divided into 4 groups randomly: control group (group Ⅰ ), exercise group (group Ⅱ ), low dose LW plus exercise group (group Ⅲ ), high dose LW plus exercise (group Ⅳ ). All rats except those in control group swam every day with incremental load for 6 weeks. By the end of the 6th week, all rats were killed and their plasma hormone, glycogen concentration and free radicals were determined. Results Liver glycogen concentration in both the exercise and the exercise + LW groups were decreased, but the glycogen concentration in exercise + LW groups was higher than that in exercise group ; SOD activity of liver tissue and muscle tissue in exercise + LW groups was higher than that in exercise group, and MDA were lower in exercise + LW groups. The serum testosterone level in exercise group decreased significantly, while remained unchanged in the exercise + LW groups. Conclusion LW could increase the levels of glycogen in liver and testosterone in serum, and improve the anti - oxidation ability of rats with exercise - induce fatigue.
