摘　　要：除了婚姻家庭主题以外,美国作家约翰.厄普代克还擅长以宗教为主题进行创作。在厄普代克的多部小说中,我们从他对美国基督新教、教会和神职人员的描写和刻画中不但可以更深刻地了解这位文学大师的创作思想,更好地理解其作品中包含的深刻含义,而且可以了解到新教在当代美国社会和美国人生活中的位置和作用,从而更好地了解当代美国文化。Apart from marriage and family themes, American writer John Updike is also skillful at religious themes. In many of his novels, through his depictions of American Protestantism, the Protestant church and clergymen, we can not only acquire a deeper understanding of the author＇s creative thoughts and the profound meaning contained in his works, but also understand the role Protestantism plays in contemporary American society and the life of ordinary Americans. That may help us gain a better knowledge of the contemporary American culture.
