摘　　要：加拿大小说家卡罗尔.希尔兹在她的小说《如果不》中以主人公的女儿辍学行乞这一主线情节牵出包括主人公在内的众多女性人前背后的故事,层层深入地展现了不同层面的两性世界中,女性在美德的神圣光环下,奉献自我、牺牲自我的失语生存状态。作品表现了女性受支配、受压抑这一主题,同时表现出女性失语对于作为女性的小说作者是怎样的一份难以承受之重。Carol Shields in her novel Unless dredges the latent fact that the female, deluded by the male to be crowned with ＂goodness＂ , are actually voiceless with no entitlement of repudiation and defiance except docile silence. The seeming lightness in the novel cannot adumbrate the author＇s composed thud in rebuking the silent reality that women are afflicted under dominance of men. The voicelessness to Carol Shields as a woman author is such an unbearable lightness.
