摘　　要：梦想的破灭是美国现代文学作品的一个主题。司各特·菲兹杰拉德小说对这一主题进行了深刻的阐释。主人公盖茨比渴望获得物质上的成功,但实现这一目的的手段却是地下交易;渴望纯真的爱情,但换回来的却是被人暗杀。盖茨比的梦想代表了美国人的梦想——美国梦,梦想破灭有其社会根源。Dream shattered is a common theme of modem American literature. E Scott Fitzgerald explores the theme in his masterpiece The Great Gatsby. The protagonist Gatsby longs for success in wealth, but he only achieves his goal by criminal means; he desires to recapture the love lost, but ends up being, murdered. Gatsby＇s dream represents American Dream and the reasons for its collapse lie deeply in the American society that he lives.
