摘　　要：V.S.奈保尔是当今世界最负盛名的英语作家之一,象征手法的出色运用是其小说《河湾》的一大艺术特色。从河湾、水葫芦、蚂蚁、面具、大人物、黑暗等几个意象对小说中的象征手法作了探讨,指出象征手法的运用营造了作品的气氛,深化了作品的主题。V. S. Naipaul is one of the most prominent writers in English literature. One of the artistic features in A Bend in the River is his successful use of symbolism. This paper analyses the using of symbolism in this novel from the following images ： a bend in the river, water hyacinths, ants, masks, big shot and darkness,and points out that the use of symbolism creates a proper atmosphere for the novel and meanwhile deepens its theme.
