AIM: Explaining the relationship of Ca^2+-ATPase activity with pathological change in cervical vertebra muscular tissue and cervical syndrome by investigating the relationship between Ca^2+ and skeletal muscle. METHODS: A computer-based on line search of PubMed database was undertaken to identify the articles about the relationship between muscle injury and Ca^2+-ATPase of the muscular tissues in English between January 1985 and December 2006 with the keywords of "Ca^2+pump, Ca^2+-ATPase, skeletal muscle". Meanwhile, the Chinese articles about the relationship between Ca^2+-ATPase and muscle injury, the etiological factors of the cervical syndrome between January 1990 and December 2006 were searched on CNKI database and Wanfang database, with the keywords of "Ca^2+-ATPase, skeletal muscle, the etiological factors of cervical syndrome". After the first check, the articles about the relationship between Ca^2+-ATPase and muscle injury were selected, then their whole article was looked up. Inclusion criteria were the articles about the close relationship between Ca^2+-ATPase activity and muscle injury. Exclusion criteria were repetitive researches and Meta analysis articles. Totally 4 050 articles about Ca^2+-ATPase activity change, muscle injury and the etiological factors of cervical syndrome were collected, and 24 articles accorded with the research criteria. RESULTS: Currently there are a large amount of researches on the correlation between enzymatic activity and skeletal muscle injury. But few study focus on pathological change of cervical soft tissues at the onset of cervical syndrome and after the treatment, respectively. Multitude researches indicate that: Ca^2+ is one of the important ions that participate skeletal muscle contraction, and it's intimately related to muscular physiology and pathology. As one of important protein on sarcoplasmic reticulum, Ca^2+-ATPase can regulate Ca^2+ level in cells. Chronic muscle injury can lower the ATPcase activity, at the
