摘　　要：美国著名黑人作家詹姆斯.鲍德温从小缺乏家庭温暖和母爱,这导致了他成年后对性爱的畸形追求和不可自拔的迷恋,他因此每每注重从“性”的角度来观察和思考包括种族歧视在内的种种人生和社会问题。他认为白人对黑人滥施私刑乃至所有种族矛盾的根源,就在于白人对黑人性能力的恐惧;他还设想性爱可以成为化解种族冲突以及其他社会矛盾的良方,这构成了詹姆斯.鲍德温观察和思考种族歧视问题的独特视角和思路。《生命的较量》这篇小说就集中体现了这种思想。James Baldwin, the American black writer, is renowned for his graphic portrayal of social and interracial relations by focusing on themes of sexual identification, because the lack of both love and feelings of belonging in his adolescence aroused in him an ineradicable impulse to retain sexual love in adulthood. In his view, the barbaric lynching by the white mob should be traced to their fear of black sexuality, and social conflicts could be solved by sexual act, heterosexual and homosexual as well as interracial. His writing was developed with this peculiar insight, which is well characterized in his short fiction 'Going to Meet the Man'.
