The Ultracytochemical localization of Ca^2+-ATPase during the phloem ganglion development in Phyllostachys edulis (Carr.) H. De Lehaie was studied with cytochemical technology. In the initiating phase of the phloem ganglion, the plasma membrane and nuclei have high Ca^2+-ATPase activity. During the developmental phase,Ca^2+-ATPase deposits in the plasma membrane decreased, but Ca^2+-ATPase activity in the nuclei remained high. Ca^2+-ATPase deposits were visualized in transfer vesicles and plasmodesmata. In the later period of the developmental phase, the distribution of Ca^2+-ATPase appeared in the tonoplast and ER(endoplasmic reticulum). During the maturation phase,Ca^2+-ATPase activity in the plasma membrane is little higher than that of in developmental phase, and during the maturation of the phloem ganglion, the nuclei, plasmodesmata,ER, plastid membrane and degradation always have high Ca^2+ -ATPase activity. These findings indicate that the phloem ganglion has active physiological metabolism, symplastic translocation and communication.
