Objective To investigate the age-related changes in regional cerebral glucose metabolism in normal subjects un der the resting state using a voxel-based method. Methods We studied 40 healthy volunteers (29 young group, 51.4± 6.4 years, and 11 old group, 72.24±3.9 years). To evaluate the regional cerebral metabolic rate of glucose (rCMRglc), ^18F- FDG PET imaging was performed in all subjects. All individual data was transformed to standard brain space, the young and old groups were compared using statistical parametric mapping. Results The regional cerebral glucose metabolism was found to be different between the young and old group. The young group had significantly higher glucose metabolism in the inferior frontal and superior temporal cortex bilaterally, and the left medial frontal cortex, left precuneus, left angular gyrus and right anterior cingulate cortex ipsilaterally. However, significant positive correlations of age with regional cerebral glu cose metabolism were observed in bilateral medial frontal cortex, cingulate cortex and the cerebellum structures. Conclusion We found that there were obvious age-related differences in regional cerebral glucose metabolism. Using the voxel-based analytical method to evaluate ^18 F-FDG PET images of degenerative dementia is valuable for studying regional cerebral glucose metabolism in normal subjects.
