摘　　要：本文通过对"A friend in need"一文的分析,指出主人公Lenny Burton的溺水而亡是由于自己受当时社会习俗的影响,没有正经营生却赌博酗酒,陷于身心交瘁的境况,求助朋友Edward Burton,却是一个虚伪自私的商人,诱使其上当受骗,死于非命。说明了Lenny Burton的悲剧根源是他所生活的社会文化习俗。Through an analysis of ＂A friend in need＂, this paper pointed out that Lenny Burton, under the influence of social customs at that time, had not earned a proper living but indulged himself in gambling and drinking. As he was down and out, he turned for help to his friend Edward Burton, a false and selfish businessman, who lured him into swimming, which eventually led to his unnatural death. It coneluded that the tragedy of Lenny Burton was originated from the cultural customs of his time.
