Tidal wetland reclamation is one of the best methods to keep the arable land amount stable in coastal areas of China. The tidal wetland in the Pearl River estuary has been mainly reclaimed into crop land and meanwhile served as one of the main uhimate sinks for large amount of heavy metals discharged from the rapidly developing economic Pearl River Delta. But the wetland soil environmental quality and its effect on reclamation was known little. The heavy metal distribution in tidal wetland soils was investigated through detailed field sampling and AAS measurement. Average concentrations ofZn, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Cd from 127 surface soil samples were 305.4, 80.3, 70.2, 69.4, 35.1 and 3.98 rag· kg^-1 respectively. The heavy metal concentrations varied with different types of wetland, and their distributions were controlled by local sewage outlet, reclamation, location on tidal flat and the content of soil clay. The wetland soils were significantly polluted by Cd, Zn and Ni, which would result in ecological risk for the current reclamation.
