Objective To verify the possibility of raising the ceiling altitude to 13 km using non pressure oxygen system in order to provide the physiological basis for simplifying the oxygen equipment for a new type of jet trainer at ceiling altitude 13 km. Methods Six healthy subjects with YX 6 oxygen system underwent test in the altitude chamber at 6.2 km, 5.3 km and 13.1 km separately and related physiological indexes were collected. Results During the test at cruising altitude for 60 ̄240 min, the physiological indexes were essentially remained unchanged. The subject completed the test at ceiling altitude 13.1 km for 1 min and then descend to 12.0 km for 2 min, but some obvious symptoms and signs such as short and deep breath, increased pulmonary ventilation, heart rate lowered T wave of ECG and slow wave of EEG (7c/s) were observed. At the same time oxyhemoglobin saturation decreased to 70% abruptly. Conclusion YX 6 oxygen system can meet the requirements to fly hours at cruising altitude, and can be used as the emergency life sustaining measurement for the new type of jet trainer at ceiling altitude.
