The American dream originally goes back to the very beginning of American civilization. To the first settlers, America was a land of great possibilities, holding a promise of spiritual and material happiness with equality for all. Gatsby has been in pursuit of his American dream, absurdly believing in the power of money, which can make everything possible. He accumulates large amounts of wealth, which he thinks, is the powerful means to pave his way to the rich world, a world, in his fantasy, full of elegance, wonder and good nature. However, his money proves invalid in fulfilling his dream. Gatsby' s tragedy suggests effectively that American dream is essentially false.
