Objective To investigate the effects of different nutritional therapies on clinical recovery of patients after liver transplantation. Method A randomized clinical trial was conducted comparing the role of enteral nutrition group with total parenteral nutrition group in 42 patients after orthotopic liver transplantation from October 2005 to December 2006, each group has 21 cases. The liver function and nutritional parameter, nutritional expenses, the length of hospitalization, the incidence of infection, mortality, recovery times of gastrointestinal function, gastrointestinal complications were compared between the two groups. Result The liver function for patients undergoing enteral nutrition was significantly better than that of total parenteral nutrition group. The incidence of infection, nutritional expenses, recovery times of gastrointestinal function, length of hospitalization were lower in enteral nutrition group. The length of hospitalization were shorter, there were significant difference between the two groups (P〈 0.05 or P〈0.01 ). There were no significant difference in nutritional parameter, mortality and gastrointestinal com- plications between the two groups (P〉0.05). Conclusion Enteral nutrition can improve the rehabilitation of patients undergoing liver transplantation.
