Fox was an auspicious animal in the works before the Qin Dynasty rather than a symbol of the evil and the wicked. Male fox in the Songs of Qi (one part of Shi iing, or the Book of Ode, the oldest classic Chinese scripture) reflected this cultural connotation passed down from the ancient age. Nevertheless, the connation of the fox gradually evolved into two different branches: one became the symbol of the wicked in literary works, and the other became the incarnation of the god in folk stories and worshipped by common people.
