Objective To study the effects of multiple cerebral concussion (MCC) on spatial cognitive behavior in rats. Methods Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats weighting between 280 g and 310 g were used. A MCC (one strike each day for continuous three days) rat model was produced using a simple pendulum device. One control and MCC groups were used at random (n =12 in each group). The Morris water maze (MWM) was used to access spatial learning and memory function. Results Compared with the control group, during the 8 th and 14 th day after MCC, the latency of finding the platform was much longer and there were significant differences in the 9 th, 10 th, 13 th, 14 th day. Compared with the control group, probe trials demonstrated that the MCC produced reductions of staying time in the target quadrant, and there were statistically differences (P 〈 0.05) in the MCC group. Conclusion Experimental MCC present severe cognitive deficits in rats after multiple cerebral concussion.
