Objective To investigate the vascularity of zonal location of benign hyperplastic nodules, and to determine the clinical value of contrast-enhanced transrectal ultrasound for assessing vascularization of the prostate gland. Methods Sixtytwo patients with hypo-echoic biopsy-proven BPH nodules in transition zone (TZ) (32 patients) or peripheral zone (PZ) (30 patients) of the prostate underwent contrast-enhanced transrectal gray-scale ultrasonography (CETRUS). In addition, microvessel density (MVD) was determined in the biopsy specimens. Findings were compared between two groups. Correlation between PI and MVD was also investigated. Results There was significant difference in enhancement pattern between PZ and TZ benign hyperplastic nodules (P〈0.01). PI was found to be important parameter strongly correlated with degree of vascularity of zonal location of hyperplastic nodules (r=0.51, P=0.01). Conclusion The hyperplastic nodules located in different zones of the prostate (PZ and TZ) showed significant difference in vascularity. CETRUS could afford information of the vascularization of BPH.
