To explore the electrophysiological and morphological properties of the neurons in the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (Vme), infrared visualized brain slice patch clamp combined with intracellular biocytin labeling and immunohistochemistry was employed to observe the electrophysiological properties and morphological characteristics of the pseudounipolar neurons of rat Vme. The present results showed that: ( 1 ) Repetitive neuronal discharges of Vme could be evoked by long term square wave depolarizing stimulus. The neurons could be divided into two types, rapid-adapting neurons and slow-adapting neurons, according to their different discharge patterns, and the majority of which was the rapid-adapting type; (2) There was no morphologically significant difference between such two types of Vme neurons which were labeled by the biocytin iontophoresed into Vme neuronal cell bodies and stained immunohistochamically. The present results suggest that morphologically identical Vme neurons may show diversified electrophysiological properties and may be involved into sophisticated functional transmission of oral-facial proprioceptive sensation.
