Objective To understand the effects of airborne pollution on cardiopulmonary function of exercisers. Methods Selected 15 exercisers and 15 healthy workers from heavy air pollution area separately as the experimental group (EG) and the positive control group (CG1), another 15 healthy workers from relatively less pollution area as the negative control group (CG2). Cardiopulmonary function under different conditions was measured using the cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). Results It was shown that HR of EG was significantly lower than the that of CG1 and CG2 at rest, ventilatory capacity (VC) and diastolic pressure (DP) of EG were significantly higher than that of CG1 and CG2 (P〈0.01, P〈0.05). When the load increased to anaerobic threshold (AT), VO2, VO2/kg, O2P and METs of CG1 were significantly lower than that of CG2 (P〈0.05, P〈0.01). When the load increased to VO2max, the results of VO2max, VO2max/kg, O2P and METs of EG and CG1 were significantly lower than that of CG2 (P〈0.05, P〈0.01), and EQO2 was significantly higher than that of CG2 (P〈0.05). Conclusion It was concluded that airborne pollution seriously affects the cardiopulmonary function and aerobic capacity. And these adverse effects on exercisers could be more obvious than on the healthy people.
