Objective To primarily investigate the epidemiological characters of metabolic syndrome (MS) and study the correlation between MS and interrelated factors. Methods In later half-year of 2006, the survey was carried out in the Guangdong Medical Examination Center for Cadres. 428 old cadres were randomly selected as the sample to study, 389 of them provided complete information. The inquiry items included physical examination, biochemistry examination, living habits and common status. Chi-square test was used to analyze at first to find significant factors roughly. Logistic regression was used to insure the correlation between influential factors and MS with confounders being controlled. Results The whole prevalence rate of MS in old cadres was 37.02%, while 44.76% in female and 34.15% in male. The prevalence rate in women was significantly higher than that in men. The fatty liver, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia were significamly correlated with MS. These factors all are risk factors. Conclusion The older women were under a higher risk situation; MS seemed to have connection with heredity. Avoiding diseases such as fatty liver, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidania might decrease the incidence rate of MS.
