FOND。The spatial change of organic nitrogen supply in the fields (FOND) in 2000 and the ascending trend of FOND from 1985 to 2000 with its contributing factors in Jiangsu province were analyzed using a Nitrogen Releasing Model developed by the authors, combined with the GIS technique. In addition, the probability to increase FOND in the province in future was assessed by running the model under a scenario of increased straw incorporation. The results indicated the av- erage of FOND simulated was about 31 kg/hm2 in 1985 in the whole province and was steadily increased to 43 kg/hm2 in 2000. The values of FOND were the highest in the Eastern area of Jiangsu province, except for a few counties, such as Sheyang, Dafeng and Qidong where cotton crop was widely planted, followed by the Northern area of the province. The val- ues of FOND were lower in Southern Province due to universal zero tillage and direct-sowing rice. Increase in crop yields, rapid development of animal husbandry, expansion of farming area using machines and global climate warming were the main reasons leading to the increase in FOND. The more straw incorporation contributed to approximately 18% of FOND raise in the whole province.
