摘　　要：根据弗洛伊德的观点,生命本能即是爱,人所受的压抑其实就是爱欲受到了压制。然而,文化与文明又伴随着人的诞生而诞生、发展而发展,是人区别于动物的一个显著特征。但是,文化和文明对人生命本能的压抑也一直伴随着人类历史的发展。霍桑在《红字》中,就探索和揭示了这一矛盾对立关系。According to Sigmund Freud, the instinct of life refers to love and the repression that human beings suffers in the civilized society mainly means that the desire to live which is repressed. However, culture and civilization accompany with the emergence and development of human beings. The culture and civilization, which are the very distinctive elements that distinguish human beings from other animals, suppress human beingss instinct. Hawthorne in ＂The Scarlet Letter＂ explores and discloses the contradictory relationship between love and civilization.
