摘　　要：CAS researchers have madeprogress in obtaining loess records through drilling operation on the northern slope of the West Kunlun Range, a mountain chain with the highest point ofCAS researchers have made progress in obtaining loess records through drilling operation on the northern slope of the West Kunlun Range, a mountain chain with the highest point of more than 7,000 meters in elevation that stretches along the southern edge of the Tarim Basin, and Taklamakan and Gobi deserts averaging about 1,100 meters in elevation. This is the first success- ful drilling operation in the soft sandy loess and the loess-like sand ever attained by Chinese scientists in an extremely arid area.
