It is necessary to study the combustion process of industrial sludge in order to utilize it efficiently as a energy source. Using thermogravimetric analysis, the combustion characteristics of 3 types of mixed industrial sludge were determined. The effects of adding different inorganic compounds at a mass ratio 1:1:1 [ KsCO3:NaCI:Al2O3 ], heating rate and pressure were measured. Results indicate that the compounds with metal element have some catalytic effects on the combustion of industrial sludge. The compounds with metals element can improve the ignition performance and burnout characteristics, and enhance its heat release capacity. The catalytic effects and mechanism of different compounds are described. The relative activity of tested catalysts towards enhancing the combustion of industrial sludge is: K2CO3 〉 NaC1 〉 Al2O3. In addition, with increasing the pressure, TG curves of industrial sludge move to the lower temperature zone, lowering the ignition and burnout temperature, and greatly improving its general combustion performance. With increased heating rate, the TG curves of industrial sludge move to the higher temperature zone and have higher ignition and burnout temperature, general combustion performance of the industrial sludge can also be improved.
