The ligand L is 1,10 phenanthroline(phen), 5 nitro 1,10 phenanthroline(NO 2 phen) and 2,2 bipyridine, and IA denotes the dianion of iodanilic acid. The complexes are characterized by elemental analysis, IR, electronic spectra, ESR and variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The coordination geometry of copper(Ⅱ) ion is probably a distorted square pyramid. Room temperature ESR spectra of all the complexes studied show the Δ M s=±2 half field transitions. The variable temperature magnetic susceptibility of Cu 2(phen) 2IA(ClO 4) 2 had been measured (4 2 ̄300 K) and the exchange parameter, J , was found to be -29 18 cm -1 using the Heisenberg model. This indicates that an antiferromagnetic interaction exists between the metal ions.
