On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Gulf Coast of the United States. Storm surge and subsequent failure of the New Orleans levee system flooded over 80% of the city of New Orleans. The impact of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans' drainage, water supply and sewage systems and the remedial actions taken to restore these systems in the wake of the hurricane were introduced emphatically. The water quality problems associated with floodwater, such as surface water, drinking water and bottled water, and the implications of these problems with respect to future disaster preparedness and relief operations were discussed. The measures to cope with urban runoff, groundwater seepage, and sanitary sewage in the weeks and months following Hurricane Katrina were provided.
