Foreign policy is largely an extension of domestic politics. As a post-colonial country, Indonesia's foreign policy is significantly influenced by its domestic society. Indonesia is an archipelagic country characterized by its diversity in ethnic groups, religions, territory and so on. To some extent, this diversity presents vulnerability, and the sense insecurity arising therefrom has great impacts on its foreign policies. Some aspects of its foreign policies such as independence, nonalignment and suspicion on great powers are the results of vulnerability and sense of insecurity. In its policy towards Indonesia and Southeast Asia, China should take into account their vulnerability and the sense of insecurity resulting from the former.
