Microstructure of nanometer polysilicon material (NMPM) was observed by a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The viscosities of diesel oil at different NMPM concentrations were measured. The swelling properties of clay in distilled water, diesel oil and diesel oil at different NMPM concentration were evaluated by using a shale swelling meter. Experiments show that the size of the NMPM is less than 100 nm and the NMPM is hydrophobic. The viscosity of diesel oil with NMPM addition is higher than that of diesel oil, and the higher the NMPM concentration, the higher the viscosity. Compared with the clay swelling rate in distilled water, the clay swelling rate in NMPM-diesel oil decreases more than 90%. With the increase of the NMPM concentration in diesel oil, the clay swelling rate decreases. The clay swelling rate in NMPM-diesel oil solution is lower than that in diesel oil. The NMPM-diesel oil treatment can make the swelled clay shrink by 2.9%. It is proved that the NMPM-diesel oil treatment can restrain the clay swelling and these results are very important for the explanation of the mechanisms for depressurizing and augmented injection in low permeability reservoirs.
