7.5。The experiment was aimed to study the effects of different sulfur or ratios of nitrogen and sulfur on performance and nutrient utilization in sheep. Forty healthy wethers with an average weight (27.06±0.86) kg were divided randomly into 4 groups which were fed with 4 diets supplied either 0.18%, 0.20%, 0.25% and 0.30% of sulfur or 4 ratios of nitrogen and sulfur (10.5 : 1, 9.0 : 1, 7.5 : 1 and 6.0 : 1) respectively. The feeding experiment lasted for 40 days and followed by the metabolism trial with 10 day adaptation period and subsequent 5 day collection period. The dietary sulfur level or the ratios of nitrogen and sulfur had marked influence on sheep performance and nutrient utilization. The optimum dietary sulfur or the ratio of nitrogen and sulfur significantly improved the growth and feed conversion rate of sheep with an average daily gain of 0.26 kg, feed/gain of 5.15, and digestibility of DM, OM, NDF, ADF and the utilization of nitrogen with values of 65.93%, 69.13%, 62.10%, 56.97%, 41.41% at the end of feeding experiment. The optimum dietary sulfur or the ratio of nitrogen and sulfur was recommended to be 0.25% and 7.5 in the Chinese wild rye and alfalfa hay based diets of sheep.
