A 8.0m long sediment core from Boyiqiao Town, NW Taihu Plain, Jiangsu Province, provides detailed information about changes in the palaeochannel and environment evolution during the Holocene based on combined analysis of multiple environmental proxies such as granularity, magnetic susceptibility and pollen. Evidences show that the Holocene palaeochannel and climate underwent three distinctive stages: 1) 11 000--9 500 cal. aBP, granularity data show that the hydrodynamics of the palaeochannel was strong and the climate was warm and moist; 2) 9 500--3 900 cal. aBP, the paleohydrodynamics of the river became much stronger, indicating the considerable rainfall related to the strong East Asia summer monsoon. The climate turned warm and wet corresponding to the Holocene Megathermal. Lowest values of magnetic susceptibility and higher amount of carbon particles possibly point to natural fire events around 7 500--7 000 cal. aBP; 3) Since 3 900 cal. aBP, granularity evidence suggests the paleohydrodynamics of the ancient river in this stage became weak and was possibly disturbed by the growing anthropogenic activity shown by the magnetic susceptibility and pollen data.
