Objective To investigate the relationship between essential hypertension and circulating endothelial progenitor cells (CEPCs) and the influence of blood pressure control on CEPCs. Methods Fifteen uncontrolled and fifteen controlled essential hypertensive patients were enrolled, with fifteen healthy subjects as the controls. CEPCs were isolated from peripheral blood and cultivated in vitro. The number, proliferation power, adhesion ability and apoptosis rate of CEPCs were comparatively analyzed after seven days cultivation. Results Compared with healthy group, both controlled and uncontrolled essen- tial hypertension groups showed significant differences in the apoptosis rate, CEPCs' number proliferation power and adhesion ability ( P 〈 0. 01 ). Between the controlled essential hypertension group and uncontrolled essential hypertension group, there were significant differences in number, apoptosis rate and proliferation power of CEPCs ( P 〈 0. 01 ), but there was no significant difference in adhesion ability ( P 〉 0. 05 ). Conclusion The CEPCs in essential hypertension patients essential hypertension patients are damaged. The therapy of antihypertensive drugs combined with drugs which could increase CEPCs number and improve CEPCs function in essential hypertensive patients might have additional benefit.
