Objective To assess the biological compatibility of Swan-like memory connecter (SMC) after long-time internal fixation. Methods SMC or stainless steel plates were randomly fixed into patients who had upper limb fractures. When internal fixators were taken out, the local soft tissues which tightly contacted metals were obtained and observed grossly, histologically and ultrastructurally. The effects of different fixators on local soft tissues were compared. Results The local soft tissues of SMC group, which were continuous with normal fibrous tissue, had regular fiber distribution and none inflammatory reaction. The main component cells were fibroblasts. No obvious hyperplasia and degeneration were observed and there was no discoloration, corrosion and foreign body reaction. Stainless steel plate group had more inflammatory reaction and disordered local soft tissues. Fibroblast was disordered with collagen fiber. Conclusion Compared with stainless steel plates, SMC made less local lesions and minor inflammation. SMC has good biological compatibility and corrosion resistance, and is an ideal biological material for medicine use.
