摘　　要：当代英国女作家A.S.拜厄特成长小说四部曲的第一部《花园处女》已基本具备"编史元小说"的特征。小说人物创作的内文本所表现的"童贞女王"伊丽莎白一世和她所代表的"黄金时代"与作者的叙事文本所表现的战后英国社会文化现状及人物命运形成多层面的对比,突显了作品的历史讽喻意义,表现出作者对人类精神文化颓废的焦虑和担忧。对性别问题以及情欲对女性事业成功的阻碍所做的初步探讨奠定了拜厄特作品关怀人类命运的主基调。The Virgin in the Garden, the first volume of the bildungsroman tetralogy by A. S Byatt, has the basic features of ＂historiographic metafiction＂.The ＂Virgin Queen＂ Elizabeth and her ＂Golden Age＂ represented in the character＇s inner text are compared on different levels with the social cultural condition and the characters＇ destinies in Britain after the war, which are represented in the author＇s narrative text, emphasizing the historically allegorical meaning and revealing the author＇ s anxiety and worry about the decadence of the human spiritual culture. A primary probe into the issues of gender and the hindering of flesh and blood to females＇ success in career sets a basic tone for A.S. Byatt＇ s concern for human fortune.
