Objective To explore the corresponding neural mechanisms involved in the process of the positive and the negative emotional pictures. Materials and Methods 20 normal subjects participated in the study, viewing the color episodic pictures including positive, negative and neutral pictures while functional MRI scans were performed and postprocessing of the functional data was completed. Results Compared with the neutral pictures, the emotional picture processes in- volved various brain regions including the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, middle and superior temporal gyrus and anterior cingulate gyms, etc.. The negative pictures activated the brain regions including the bilateral amygdala, right orbital gyrus, left hippocampus, thalamus and fusiform gyms, etc. , while the positive evoked the right amygdala, left dorsal prefrontal cortex and right hippocampus, etc. Conclusion The positive and negative emotional encoding processes involved in common and relatively specific neural mechanisms. Amygdala and various prefrontal subcortex were the important structures in the differ- ent emotional picture processes. Participation of prefrontal lobe in emotional processing was consistent with emotional valence hypothesis.
