Objective To investigate co-infection among HIV-infected individuals who were previous irregular plasma/ blood donors(PBDs)in Anhui province. Methods HIV infected PBDs were recruited as subjects under study from March, 2004 to March,2005 in Anhui province. Blood samples were collected to test toxoplasma infections with ELISA method and CD4^+ T cells and plasma viral load were measured simultaneously as indicators of progress of HIV/AIDS. Result Of 367 investigated PBDs, 11 individuals were confirmed as co-infected with toxoplasma(3 % ).Comparing to the group of HIV mono-infection, the patients in the group with HIV/Toxoplasma co-infection had lower CD4^+T cells counts, but higher plasma viral load, especially when the patients had CD4^+ T cells near or below 200 cells/1, though the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion Our study suggests that the management of AIDS patients should also include monitoring of life threatening AIDS related co-infection such as toxoplasma in order to use prophylactic medicines in good time and reduce deaths caused by this co-infection.
